Up and coming circus performer, Jeri Deane, finds a young clown strangled inside a beloved lion's cage. The town sheriff's threat to close down the Big Top won't stop her from finding his killer. Beneath the spangles and sawdust of the canvas sky, Jeri uncovers deceit, treachery, and secrets more dangerous than any death-defying trick in the circus. Even she has much to hide. If the Big top survives the season, will she be able to face her own hidden past?
Heather Haven is the daughter of real-life Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus folk. Her mother was a trapeze artist/performer and father, an elephant trainer.
Heather brings the daily existence of the Big Top to life during World War II, embellished by her own murderous imagination.

Death of a ClownI’ve read several mysteries by Heather Haven, and enjoyed them all. She’s witty, clever, writes engaging characters and places them in interesting settings with plenty of fascinating behind-the-scenes research. I like her people; they’re good company. With DEATH OF A CLOWN, something has changed. The tone is darker, hypnotic. The characters are still engaging, the setting, a circus, is fascinating and remarkable in its detail. But something has been added; this is truly literature. It’s the kind of writing I read for, a certain mood, a great confidence, storytelling that sings. Sometimes the tune is quiet, sometimes more boisterous. Nothing is obvious. It’s like being in a dark clearing in the forest, raptly listening to a great storyteller in a pool of firelight. It is the voice of a mature writer who can work in that ineffable realm of tone. It is a primal experience.
Much of what I read has been science fiction and horror. There are writers old and new and gone who speak to me in this particular way: Sturgeon, Bradbury of course, Beaumont, Henderson, and some of the new crop, from Alan Brennert to Dale Bailey. When I read these voices, when I listen to them, I feel as if I am being spoken to in just the right way. That’s what this book is doing; I cannot recall another mystery that did it so well, so thoroughly.
Appreciation to Ms. Haven for this new direction. I hope she chooses to pursue it. It’s a wonderful read, and I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Death of A Clown edition by Heather Haven Baird Nuckolls Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
Death of A Clown was a wonderful read. Finished it in two days, could not stop reading it. It included every emotion, happy, sad, fear, empathy.
If you want to know about the circus this is the book for you. It is a well written mystery too.
What a great story! I couldn't put it down. I highly recommend it to everyone. What makes it special is having her mother's picture on the cover of the book. Could her mother have been "Jeri"? Since this is a work of fiction, probably not, but you never know!
This is a little different from the usual women's mystery novels. Heather has painted a portrait of a circus world that I'm sure many of us could never imagine. The mystery and crime solving, as always, is totally coherent and solvable with the twist we expect from Ms. Haven. It definitely stands alone but would love it to become a series!!!
I usually really enjoy Heather Haven, but for whatever reason I just couldn't get through this one. There were no glaring reasons, I just set it down one day and never picked it up again. I will definitely buy another book of hers, as I've greatly enjoyed every other book of hers that I've ever bought. But this one didn't carry me to the end.
This is a fascinating novel of the behind-the-scene life of circus performers. Murder and mystery with twists, turns, and red herrings only add to the brilliant descriptions of performers and their ability to entertain countless audiences of all ages. It successfully lead this reader into a personal nostalgia of attending the circus as a child with all it's beauty, thrills and excitement. Heather Haven has provided a fascinating novel for anyone who enjoys historical mysteries, the circus, and excellent story telling.
This book provides good insight into life on a circus in the 1940s. It is interesting and most of the time the plot moves along quickly. I did struggle somewhat to get through the final third of the book.
For me, it seems the book goes overboard including social justice issues. It is almost as if the author compiled a list of issues and made sure she incorporated each one – Sexual abuse of a minor, check. Physical abuse, check. Teen suicide, check. Female empowerment, check. Racial segregation/injustice, check. Some of these sub-plots add little to the story.
The editing of the book was at times frustrating. Throughout the book there are times where a paragraph ends abruptly in the middle of a sentence and continues on the next, indented line (with no capital letter starting the next paragraph – appropriate since it is the continuation of a sentence). These are fairly easy to find – just skim down each page and look for paragraphs that start with a lowercase letter. Less frequently, paragraphs start with a “double” indentation. On one page, three consecutive paragraphs start with double indents. The author spent six years writing this book. I wish she had spent one final day cleaning up the formatting of the text. I have not read any other Heather Haven books, so I do not know if these problems are endemic to her other works.
I think this book will appeal most to those who are interested in historic circuses, murder mysteries with a female lead, or social justice issues.
